History and origins
The site where Cavarzere now stands was most likely a fortified outpost of the Etruscans of Adria, and its land was worked in ancient times first by the Etruscans themselves and then by Roman colonists, in a territory that at the time faced directly onto the Adriatic marshes. In the centuries that followed, the gradual retreat of the waters turned the area from a lagoon fringe into stable mainland, a process that deeply shaped the identity of the place, suspended between its Venetian and Polesine belonging. Its border position, between the Venice lagoons and the plain of the lower Adige, made Cavarzere for a long time a contested crossing point between different jurisdictions.
What to see
Cavarzere's centre preserves the typical layout of the towns of the lower Venetian plain, grown around the parish church and the course of the Adige river, which still crosses the settlement today, shaping its geography. The town's civil and religious architecture tells a story shaped more by agricultural labour and water management than by great artistic patronage, offering the authentic picture of a lower-Venetian town that grew in close relationship with the river and the surrounding land.
Nature and surroundings
Cavarzere's landscape is dominated by the Adige river, which flows gently here toward its mouth, and by a dense network of drainage canals and embankments that regulate the waters of a plain entirely reclaimed from marshland. The territory lies close to the border with Polesine and the wetlands of the Po Delta, in a transitional natural area of interest to birdwatchers and to those cycling along the river embankments, where the boundary between the provinces of Venice and Rovigo becomes almost imperceptible in the landscape.

Agriculture remains the economic and identity-defining engine of Cavarzere, which falls within the protected production area of Radicchio di Chioggia IGP, grown together with the neighbouring towns of Chioggia, Cona and other centres across the provinces of Venice, Padua and Rovigo. Alongside radicchio, the Cavarzere countryside produces cereals, vegetables and fodder crops, supporting a widespread agricultural economy that is also reflected in the local cuisine, simple and tied to the seasonal produce of the lower Venetian plain.

Cavarzere today is a town with a predominantly agricultural economy, with a productive fabric that also includes small craft and commercial activities linked to the rural world. Its border position between Venice and Rovigo makes it a point of reference for the towns of the lower plain, while proximity to Chioggia also opens outlets toward fishing and port activities.
