Cesiomaggiore is a municipality in the Valbelluna, the pre-Alpine basin that opens around Feltre and Belluno at the foot of the Belluno Dolomites. The municipal territory, partly within the Belluno Dolomites National Park, alternates rural hamlets, woods and meadows rising toward the hills, in a mountain landscape still tied to farming and grazing. The hamlet of Seravella is home to the Ethnographic Museum of the Province of Belluno and the Belluno Dolomites National Park, opened in 1997 inside Villa Avogadro degli Azzoni, a nineteenth-century residence that belonged to the Avogadro degli Azzoni family and was restored by the Comunità Montana Feltrina. The museum gathers objects, documents and images on the everyday life of the Belluno people, covering mountain adaptation, animal husbandry, emigration and diet, and is surrounded by a garden with over three hundred varieties of old roses. Nearby, in the municipality of Sospirolo, stands the Certosa di Vedana, a destination for visitors exploring this part of the Valbelluna.

The story

The story of Cesiomaggiore

Geography and territory

The municipality lies in the Valbelluna, between Feltre and Belluno, with land rising from the valley floor toward the first slopes of the Belluno Dolomites. Part of its territory falls within the Belluno Dolomites National Park, established to protect a mountain environment rich in woods, meadows and alpine wildlife. The landscape is marked by small scattered hamlets, typical of rural settlement in the Belluno area.

The Ethnographic Museum of Seravella

In the hamlet of Seravella stands the Ethnographic Museum of the Province of Belluno and the Belluno Dolomites National Park, opened in 1997 inside Villa Avogadro degli Azzoni, a nineteenth-century residence purchased and restored by the Comunità Montana Feltrina in 1994. Eighteen exhibition sections document the popular culture of the Belluno area: adaptation to mountain life, wet-nursing, emigration, animal husbandry and local diet.

The old rose garden

Around Villa Avogadro degli Azzoni lies a garden with over three hundred varieties of old roses, transplanted from private gardens, villas and churches across the province of Belluno. Open since 1997, the garden forms an integral part of the museum visit and offers a botanical counterpoint to the ethnographic halls.

Nearby: the Certosa di Vedana

In the nearby municipality of Sospirolo, a short distance from Cesiomaggiore, stands the Certosa di Vedana, one of the oldest enclosed monasteries in the Alps, still home to a monastic community. Its proximity makes Cesiomaggiore a good base for exploring this part of the Valbelluna, amid historic buildings and mountain scenery.

Mountain life and farming

The local economy retains an agricultural and livestock component, with hay meadows, small farms and produce typical of the Valbelluna. The municipality's hamlets preserve rural stone-and-timber buildings characteristic of the Belluno Pre-Alps.
