The story
The story of Este
Este and the Paleoveneti
Este owes its historical fame to the Atestini, the Paleoveneti community that settled this territory from the 9th century BC, giving rise to one of the most refined civilisations of pre-Roman Italy. The Atestini were skilled bronze and iron craftsmen, farmers and traders in contact with the Etruscans, the Greeks and transalpine peoples via the Adige River routes and the Alpine passes. The necropolises found across the municipal territory, with thousands of tombs and grave goods, have yielded an extraordinary quantity of finds documenting the social organisation, religious beliefs and technical skills of this people. The city's own name, Ateste in Roman times, most likely derives from a Paleoveneto root that predates the Roman conquest of the 2nd century BC.
The Museo Nazionale Atestino and the Situla
The Museo Nazionale Atestino, housed in the sixteenth-century Palazzo Mocenigo in the heart of Este, is one of Italy's oldest archaeological museums, founded in 1880 to gather finds from excavation campaigns carried out across the territory. Its rooms display grave goods, votive bronzes, inscriptions in the Paleoveneto alphabet and pottery that trace local history from proto-history to the Roman age. The most celebrated piece in the collection is the Situla Benvenuti, an embossed bronze vessel from the 7th century BC decorated with figurative friezes depicting scenes of daily life, ceremonies and processions: a masterpiece of situla art, unique for its quality and state of preservation, and a key reference point for the study of the entire Atestine civilisation.
The Castello Carrarese and its gardens
The Castello Carrarese dominates the centre of Este with its crenellated walls topped by Ghibelline merlons, its towers and walkways extending for hundreds of metres. It was built during the Middle Ages on earlier fortifications and took its current form under the Carrarese lords of Padua in the 14th century, as a defensive stronghold facing Venetian territory. Today the area within the walls houses the municipal public gardens, a large tree-lined park that also hosts the Museo Nazionale Atestino, creating a striking dialogue between archaeology and nature. Walking along the ramparts offers panoramic views over the Euganean Hills and the surrounding plain, making the castle one of the most cherished spots for both residents and visitors.
The House of Este
The bond between the town of Este and the noble family of the same name dates back to the early Middle Ages, when the House took its name precisely from this castle and this territory, before later moving the centre of its power elsewhere. The Este family became one of the most influential dynasties in Italy, ruling as marquises and later dukes over Ferrara for centuries and subsequently over Modena and Reggio Emilia, right up to Italian unification. Under their guidance, the Este courts of Ferrara and Modena flourished as centres of Renaissance art, literature and culture, hosting artists and poets of European fame. Este therefore retains a symbolic role as the place of origin of one of the most important noble houses in Italian and European history, a legacy the town proudly claims.
Este's fine art ceramics
Este is also known for its ceramic tradition, which has its roots in the 18th century, when manufactories capable of rivalling Europe's great porcelain centres arose in this Paduan town. The historic production of Atestine ceramics, distinguished by refined decoration and high-quality clay bodies, has continued through the centuries to the present day, keeping alive a craft chain of workshops, master ceramists and training schools. In the historic centre it is still possible to visit workshops where pieces are thrown on the wheel and hand-painted, drawing inspiration both from ancient decorative tradition and contemporary design languages. This artisan vocation makes Este an interesting stop for anyone passionate about applied arts and quality Italian craftsmanship.
The Duomo and Tiepolo
The Duomo of Este, dedicated to Santa Tecla, overlooks one of the town's main squares with its neoclassical façade and is the focal point of local religious life. The current building, rebuilt in the 18th century after a fire destroyed the previous church, houses an important altarpiece depicting Saint Thecla freeing Este from the plague, a masterpiece painted by Giambattista Tiepolo in 1759. The work, among the most significant examples of 18th-century Venetian painting found in the province of Padua, draws art lovers and tourists to the town every year. The Duomo's Greek-cross interior also holds other furnishings and artworks that deserve an unhurried visit.
The Euganean Hills
Este lies right at the foot of the Euganean Hills, an isolated group of volcanic hills rising from the Venetian plain that today forms a regional park of great natural value. From Este, hiking and cycling routes climb into the hills through terraced vineyards, chestnut woods and historic villages such as Arquà Petrarca, Monselice and Baone. The area is also known for the thermal springs that feed the nearby Euganean Spas, between Abano and Montegrotto, a wellness destination since Roman times. Its proximity to this hilly landscape makes Este an ideal starting point for a kind of tourism that combines culture, nature, food and wine, and thermal relaxation within a single, compact area.
How to visit
Este is located about 35 kilometres from Padua and is easily reached by train along the Padua-Este-Monselice line or by car via the local road network, with good connections to Vicenza and Rovigo as well. The historic centre is easily explored on foot, starting from the Castello Carrarese and the public gardens before reaching the Museo Nazionale Atestino, the Duomo and the streets of the centre where the ceramic workshops are found. The town also lends itself to a multi-day stay, as a base for exploring the nearby Euganean Hills and Euganean Spas. Spring and autumn are ideal seasons for combining cultural visits with excursions into the surrounding hills.
