Fossò is a municipality in the metropolitan city of Venice located in the Riviera del Brenta, the area stretching along the course of the Brenta river between Padua and Venice, historically known for its Venetian villas and, more recently, for the shoemaking district that has made this stretch of plain one of Italy's main hubs for quality footwear production. The municipal territory is flat, with an agricultural and productive character, with small and medium-sized businesses tied to the shoe manufacturing supply chain coexisting alongside residential housing and cultivated plots. Unlike other towns of the Riviera del Brenta more directly facing the waterway and its heritage of historic villas, Fossò has a more markedly artisan and productive vocation, tied to work in local shoemaking businesses, which employ a significant share of the working population. The municipality is not a tourist destination in the strict sense, but its position makes it a convenient point along the route of the villas on the Brenta between Padua, Stra, Dolo and Mira.

The story

The story of Fossò

In the Riviera del Brenta

Fossò falls within the geographic and administrative area of the Riviera del Brenta, the belt of territory following the river's course between Padua and the Venetian lagoon, famous for its sequence of Venetian villas built by the nobility between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. The municipality lies inland relative to the river's main course, in a setting more agricultural and productive than monumental.

The shoemaking district

The Riviera del Brenta, and Fossò with it, is home to one of Italy's most important shoemaking districts, specialising in high-end footwear production for national and international brands. Numerous small and medium-sized businesses in the municipality work along the supply chain, from leatherworking to assembly, keeping alive craft skills passed down through generations of local shoemakers.

A farming and productive territory

Alongside shoemaking, the municipal territory retains cultivated farmland, within a landscape typical of the eastern Veneto plain crossed by minor drainage canals. It is a setting where manufacturing and farming coexist, without the tourist density found in other locations in the area.

Close to the route of the Brenta villas

While it does not host the most famous villas, Fossò lies a short distance from towns such as Dolo, Mira and Stra, stops along the well-known tourist route of the Venetian villas along the Brenta canal, which includes historic residences such as Villa Pisani in Stra. Its position makes it a practical base for exploring the area without staying there directly.
