Monteforte d'Alpone is a municipality in the province of Verona set at the mouth of the Alpone valley, among hills of volcanic origin that fall within the production area of Soave DOC and Soave Superiore DOCG wine. The town borders directly on Soave itself, sharing its agrarian landscape of terraced vineyards, dry-stone walls and basalt outcrops, evidence of the volcanic activity that shaped this part of the Lessini mountains tens of millions of years ago. The local economy has for generations revolved around viticulture, with numerous wineries, some family-run and others organised as cooperatives, bottling and marketing the Soave produced on the municipality's hillside land. Alongside wine, Monteforte also has a history tied to flower growing, particularly carnation cultivation, which played a significant economic role in the twentieth century. The town centre preserves a historic layout with a medieval tower, evidence of the defensive role the area once played along the Alpone valley.

The story

The story of Monteforte d'Alpone

In the heart of Soave wine country

Monteforte d'Alpone lies within the oldest and most suited part of the Soave denomination, together with the neighbouring town of Soave itself. The vineyards climb terraces held up by dry-stone walls, a historic farming system that makes otherwise difficult slopes workable and today is also recognised as a landscape feature in its own right. The main grape variety is garganega, which on these volcanic soils produces white wines with acknowledged mineral structure.

Hills of volcanic origin

The hills surrounding the town are the remains of ancient submarine and subaerial volcanic activity that affected this part of the eastern Lessini mountains. Basalt and tuff outcrop along country roads and within the vineyards, giving the soils a mineral composition that local producers cite as a distinguishing factor of the area's wines, together with the hills' temperature range between day and night.

Wineries and wine production

The municipality is home to several wine producers, from small family businesses to larger wineries, some belonging to historic cooperatives of the Soave area. Many offer vineyard and cellar visits with tastings, an activity that over the years has become part of the Alpone valley's tourist offering alongside direct sales.

The carnation-growing tradition

Alongside grape growing, Monteforte d'Alpone experienced a flourishing greenhouse carnation trade during the twentieth century, a flower-growing activity that for decades ran alongside traditional agriculture and employed a number of families in the town, before the sector's gradual decline at national level.

The historic centre and the tower

The town centre preserves traces of its past as a stronghold along the Alpone valley, with a medieval tower overlooking the settlement and remains of fortifications that in the Middle Ages controlled access to the valley toward the Lessini hills. Around it lies a fabric of houses and streets typical of the Verona hill towns.
