Oppeano is a municipality in the Lower Verona plain, about twenty kilometres southeast of Verona, spread across farmland crossed by the Bussè, Piganzo and Menago rivers, all tributaries of the Tartaro. It is not a monumental town but a settlement spread across several hamlets - including Ca' degli Oppi, Vallese, Mazzantica and Villafontana - which in recent years has become one of the more dynamic centres of the Lower Verona area, thanks to an administration focused on services and a growing population. Its roots go back to the Atestine civilisation, with significant archaeological finds, and in the Middle Ages it was contested land between Scaligeri and Venetian rule, under the Republic of Venice from 1405 to 1796. In 2011 it was granted city status. Visitors to Oppeano find an authentic agricultural territory, typical of the Lower Verona plain, made up of cultivated fields, small settlements and a hardworking, unshowy provincial life.

The story

The story of Oppeano

History and origins

The first written mentions of Oppeano date to the ninth and tenth centuries, with names such as Opdanum and Castropedanum suggesting a fortified settlement. The territory holds much older traces linked to the Atestine civilisation: finds from the necropolises around Oppeano are now held in museums in Este, Verona, Legnago and even Rome and Florence. In the Middle Ages Oppeano fell under the podesteria of Verona and then under Scaligeri rule; from 1405 to 1796 it was part of the Republic of Venice's domains. City status, granted in 2011, confirmed the municipality's growing role in the Lower Verona area.

What to see / main sights

Oppeano has no monumental centre in the strict sense, but a fabric of hamlets each with its own parish church and small local collections of archaeological finds, evidence of the area's long Atestine and Roman past. The municipality's structure, spread across several nuclei - Oppeano capoluogo, Ca' degli Oppi, Vallese, Mazzantica and part of Villafontana - reflects the history of a rural territory organised around small farming villages rather than a single old town.

Nature and surroundings

The municipal territory is defined by the Bussè, Piganzo and Menago rivers, tributaries of the Tartaro, which trace a typical irrigated plain of the Lower Verona area. It is an open agricultural landscape of cultivated fields and canals, ideal for those seeking direct contact with the Veneto countryside and the slow rhythm of rural life, away from the busier tourist routes.

Food and local products

Like much of the Lower Verona plain, Oppeano lives on intensive agriculture: cereals, fodder crops and livestock farming are the backbone of the local economy, with products that feed into the Verona food supply chain, from cheeses to cured meats typical of Veneto's farming tradition.

Getting there and location

Oppeano lies about 22 kilometres southeast of Verona, in a strategic position in the Lower Verona plain, well connected to the city of Verona via provincial roads crossing the plain. It can be reached by car in just over twenty minutes from Verona and lies close to other towns in the area such as Isola della Scala and Bovolone.

Local life and economy

In recent years Oppeano has recorded population growth above the local average, becoming a reference centre for services in the Lower Verona area. The economy remains predominantly agricultural, but has been enriched by small and medium craft and commercial businesses spread across the various hamlets, a sign of a territory consolidating its strategic role.
