Piazzola sul Brenta stands along the Brenta river, on the plain of Padua, dominated by one of the most extraordinary monumental complexes in the Veneto: Villa Contarini, often called the Versailles of the Veneto for its outsized dimensions, over one hundred and eighty metres long, larger even than Buckingham Palace. The villa's origins date back to 1546, when it was commissioned by Paolo and Francesco Contarini, but it was in the seventeenth century, with the Baroque transformation carried out by Marco Contarini, that it took on the grand appearance that still defines it today. An entire town developed around the villa over the centuries, shaped first by the Contarini family and then, in the nineteenth century, by the industrialist Paolo Camerini, who built a significant agro industrial district integrated with the monumental complex. Today Piazzola sul Brenta combines this extraordinary architectural heritage with a lively commercial life, with a weekly market and one of the best known antiques fairs in the Veneto, which fills the square, porticoes and courtyards of the villa on the last Sunday of every month.

The story

The story of Piazzola sul Brenta

History and origins

Villa Contarini was built starting in 1546 at the will of Paolo and Francesco Contarini, and according to some sources based on a design linked to Andrea Palladio. It was Marco Contarini, procurator of San Marco, who transformed it around 1662 into a vast Baroque palace surrounded by a large park, intended for receptions, festivities and performances. In the nineteenth century the property passed to Paolo Camerini, an industrialist of the time, who built an important agro industrial district around the villa, permanently linking the fate of the monumental complex to that of the town.

What to see

Villa Contarini, with its facade stretching over one hundred and eighty metres, is the largest Venetian villa in the region and can be visited, together with its historic rooms, its centuries old park and the exceptional Baroque proportions willed by Marco Contarini. Around the complex stand the porticoes, courtyards and buildings of the former industrial district created by Paolo Camerini, today partly restored and woven into the life of the town.

Nature and surroundings

The Brenta river runs along the edge of the town, offering embankments that can be walked or cycled, set in a landscape of cultivated plain typical of the area north of Padua. The river's proximity has historically encouraged the agricultural and industrial development of the territory, as well as making the surrounding landscape particularly suited to relaxed walks.

Events and traditions

The antiques market at Villa Contarini, held on the last Sunday of every month across the square, porticoes and courtyards of the former Camerini jute factory, is one of the most striking events in the Veneto, drawing hundreds of exhibitors and visitors. Alongside this event, the town hosts its weekly market on Friday mornings in Piazza Paolo Camerini, a moment of everyday community life.

Local life and economy

The industrial legacy created by Paolo Camerini continues to shape the local economy, which today combines small and medium sized businesses with agriculture still present in the surrounding territory. The draw of Villa Contarini also generates a steady flow of visitors, especially during the antiques market, with positive effects on local commerce and hospitality.

Getting there

Piazzola sul Brenta lies about twenty five kilometres north west of Padua, easily reached by car along the provincial roads that follow the course of the Brenta. Its position, not far from Vicenza either, makes it a convenient stop for anyone visiting the Venetian villas of the area.
