Recoaro Terme is the leading spa and mountain-climate resort of the Piccole Dolomiti in the Vicenza area, set at 445 metres in the so-called Conca di Smeraldo, at the head of the upper Agno Valley. The town, settled long ago by Cimbrian colonists, owes its fortune to the discovery in 1689 of its mineral springs by Count Lelio Piovene: from then on Recoaro became a spa resort of European renown, visited between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries by figures such as Nietzsche, Verdi, Mascagni and Queen Margherita of Savoy. The historic springs, now gathered at the Fonti Centrali, still supply the town's thermal activity. But Recoaro is not only about spas: from here a road climbs to Recoaro Mille, a panoramic plateau above a thousand metres reached by car or by cable car, the gateway to hiking in the Piccole Dolomiti, on Mount Pasubio and in the Carega massif. It is a destination that combines wellness, mountains and a long tourist history, with a clear and recognisable identity.

The story

The story of Recoaro Terme

History and Cimbrian origins

The first stable settlements in the valley date to the Middle Ages, when Cimbrian populations from the north colonised the area, founding the first villages that still reveal their ancient Germanic origins in place names and in some surviving traditions. The decisive turning point for the town's history, however, came only in 1689, with the discovery of mineral water springs by Count Lelio Piovene, an event that transformed a small mountain village into a health destination visited from across Europe.

The spa and the Fonti Centrali

The memory of the old spa complex survives today in the Fonti Centrali, which group together the Amara, Lelia, Lorgna, Lora and Nuova springs, the heart of Recoaro's present-day hydrotherapy complex. Between the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the town experienced its golden age as a spa resort, drawing intellectuals, artists and European nobility attracted by the curative properties of its waters.

Recoaro Mille and the Piccole Dolomiti

Above the spa centre stretches the Recoaro Mille plateau, at just over a thousand metres, reachable by car or by a panoramic chairlift. From here trails lead toward the peaks of the Piccole Dolomiti, the Pasubio massif, the setting for important events of the First World War, and the Carega group, all ideal destinations for hikes of varying difficulty across high-altitude meadows, woods and rock faces.

Food, wine and mountain produce

Recoaro's culinary tradition reflects its mountain character, with alpine dairy cheeses, cured meats, mushrooms and forest produce featuring on the menus of local trattorias, alongside the simple, seasonal dishes typical of Vicenza's mountain cuisine.

Events and local life

Throughout the year Recoaro Terme hosts events linked to its spa heritage and its hiking traditions, along with food and wine gatherings celebrating the valley's produce. The local community keeps alive its connection to the history of the waters and the mountains, elements that remain central to the town's identity.

How to get there

Recoaro Terme lies in the upper Agno Valley, about forty kilometres from Vicenza, reachable by car via Valdagno or by suburban bus services from the province. The nearest railway station is Vicenza.
