From Benedictine monastery to noble residence
The origins of the Dominio di Bagnoli date back to the year 1000, when the area was founded as a Benedictine monastery. The villa that now dominates the town center, Villa Widmann Borletti, was built in 1656 at the wish of Ludovico Widmann, who entrusted the project to architect Baldassarre Longhena, one of the leading figures of Venetian Baroque. During the First World War the property passed to the Borletti family, Milanese industrialists, from whom the double name by which the villa is still known today derives. The complex includes, besides the residential building with its monumental garden, historic wine cellars and a grain store with a terrace, evidence of an estate conceived from the outset to combine noble representation with farming activity.
The Brolo: twenty hectares of protected nature
The villa's park, locally called the 'Brolo', was originally the vegetable garden and orchard of the medieval monastery and today covers around twenty hectares, enclosed by an ancient wall. Inside are two small lakes that make the area a genuine natural oasis: it shelters a colony of grey herons and rarer species such as the Eurasian bittern, water rail, red-backed shrike and various diurnal and nocturnal birds of prey. The historic garden is enriched by around one hundred and sixty sculptures, including classical deities, zodiac signs and the famous Commedia dell'Arte statues created by Antonio Bonazza in 1742, making a walk through the park as much an artistic experience as a natural one.
Friularo, a wine with eight centuries of history
The oldest document mentioning the wines of Bagnoli is a donation deed to the bishop of Padua dating back to 954, while a price list from 1774 lists Friularo as the most expensive and sought-after wine in the area. Made from at least ninety percent Raboso Piave grapes, locally called 'friularo', this intense red wine with violet hues that turn garnet with aging is today protected under the Bagnoli Friularo DOCG designation, achieved in 2011 building on the earlier Bagnoli DOC. The 'classico' version of the designation is reserved exclusively for vineyards within the municipal territory of Bagnoli di Sopra, a detail that inseparably ties this wine to the town that gives it its name.
Rice, countryside and a still-productive estate
Beyond the villa, Bagnoli di Sopra remains a deeply agricultural municipality of the low Padua plain, where viticulture is joined by rice cultivation, typical of these low, water-rich lands. The Dominio di Bagnoli itself, while a historic site open to visitors, continues to function today as a multifunctional estate with wine production, hospitality and events, a model that combines heritage conservation with real economic activity. Don't expect an open-air museum town: daily life here is marked by fieldwork and the harvest seasons, and it is precisely this agricultural concreteness, rather than a mass-tourism vocation, that defines the character of the area.
A heritage to experience slowly
Visitors to Bagnoli di Sopra should set aside time to truly enjoy the place: a guided tour of the villa and historic cellars, a walk through the Brolo among eighteenth-century statues and herons, and of course a tasting of Friularo paired with local produce. It is an experience designed for a slow pace rather than a rush, suited to couples or small groups looking for an authentic alternative to the more crowded Venetian villas along the Brenta or the Riviera. The short distance from Padua, easily reached by car, makes Bagnoli di Sopra an ideal stop for a half-day trip or an overnight stay at the estate itself.
