История Loria
Between the Treviso plain and the Vicenza border
The territory of Loria extends across the upper Treviso plain, in an area of transition towards the province of Vicenza. The landscape is typical of the Venetian countryside, with intensive farming, minor waterways and settlements of ancient origin scattered among the fields.
The origins and the rule of the Ezzelini
Human settlement in the Loria area dates back at least to Roman times. Between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries the territory was involved in the affairs of the Ezzelini family, among the most powerful in the March of Treviso: Loria and its hamlets appear in the inventories of the family's properties compiled after its defeat in 1260.
Bessica, of Roman origin
Bessica is the most populous of Loria's hamlets. Its name is traced back to the Latin term bessis, an ancient unit of land measurement, evidence of origins rooted in Roman times and the subdivision of cultivated land.
Castione, a complex administrative history
The hamlet of Castione underwent particular administrative changes: in 1868 it was detached from Loria and joined to the municipality of Castello di Godego, before being reunited with Loria in 1887. These changes reflect the administrative reorganisations that affected many small centres of the Venetian plain between the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Ramon and the countryside
Ramon is the third hamlet of the municipality, a small rural centre set within the cultivated countryside of the upper Treviso plain. Like the rest of the municipal territory, it retains an agricultural character, with farms dedicated to field crops and livestock.
Rural life and local traditions
Loria retains a strong agricultural vocation, with farms engaged in field cultivation and small craft businesses spread between the main town and the hamlets. The landscape, made up of cultivated fields and minor waterways, reflects the typical character of the upper Treviso countryside.
