История San Giovanni Ilarione
A landscape born of volcanoes
The hills surrounding San Giovanni Ilarione have a surprising geological origin: between the late Cretaceous and the Eocene, a period spanning roughly 145 to 34 million years ago, the Val d'Alpone area was affected by intense submarine volcanic activity that left behind formations of basalt, tuff and alternating carbonate rock. This volcanic origin made the area's soils particularly mineral-rich, an ideal condition for viticulture and for varied vegetation including chestnut woods, hazelnut groves and orchards. The gently rolling hill landscape, with its cultivated terraces, thus tells a geological story spanning millions of years, visible today while walking among the vine rows and paths of the area.
Durello wine and the Val d'Alpone
The Durella grape variety, from which Lessini Durello DOC is made, is a native white variety rooted in the valley since medieval times, grown mainly in the high valleys of the Lessini Mountains between the provinces of Verona and Vicenza. The grapes, marked by high acidity partly due to the volcanic soils, produce classic-method sparkling wines valued for their structure and longevity, increasingly recognised both nationally and internationally. San Giovanni Ilarione, together with the neighbouring towns of the Val d'Alpone, is part of the territory nominated for UNESCO recognition alongside the Soave area, for the landscape and cultural value of the heroic viticulture practised on these slopes.
Cherries and hillside fruit
Alongside the vine, the hills of San Giovanni Ilarione have traditionally been home to cherry cultivation, a fruit that, like in other Veneto foothill areas, plays an important role in the local farming economy, especially in spring when the blossoming cherry trees colour the landscape. Chestnut groves, widespread in the higher parts of the municipal territory, provide another typical seasonal product, harvested in autumn and celebrated at some local festivals. This variety of crops, from vine to cherry to chestnut, makes farming in San Giovanni Ilarione diversified and tied to a harvest calendar that still shapes the rhythm of village life today.
Village life and community
San Giovanni Ilarione today has just over four thousand inhabitants, with an economy split between farming, small craft businesses and a few small-scale industrial activities. It is not a major tourist destination, but a village that lives off its own land, with family-run wineries, agriturismi and chestnut and cherry producers who open their doors to those wanting to get to know the products of the Val d'Alpone up close. The festivals tied to the grape harvest and the autumn harvest remain the most authentic moments to discover the cuisine and traditions of this hilly part of the Verona area.
Getting there and surroundings
San Giovanni Ilarione is reached from the Verona plain by following the roads that climb the Val d'Alpone, in a convenient position for also visiting the nearby Soave area and the Lessini Mountains. The town lends itself to nearby wine, food and nature tourism, among wineries, hillside trails and the neighbouring villages of Montecchia di Crosara, Roncà and Vestenanova, with which it shares the Val d'Alpone territory. It is an ideal area for those seeking a weekend away from the more crowded destinations of the Verona area, among terraced vineyards and still-authentic landscapes.
