История Sovizzo
Between the Lessini and the Colli Berici
Sovizzo's territory extends between the last foothills of the Lessini mountains and the Colli Berici, in a hilly area reaching up to two hundred metres, formed from sedimentary limestone that originated in a marine environment between forty and twenty million years ago and was later shaped by erosion. The town's name, possibly derived from the Latin subvicum, is thought to recall its position at the foot of the first hills.
Villa Bissari-Curti and its park
In the town centre, facing the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, stands Villa Bissari-Curti, built in the second half of the sixteenth century and reworked several times in the following centuries, including the addition of a theatrical-style garden pavilion. Set within a centuries-old park, the villa was built by the counts Sale di San Damiano on the remains of an earlier structure, the castle of the Bissari family, destroyed in the thirteenth century. It remains the town's principal historic and architectural landmark.
Traces of the medieval castle
On the hill near the church, traces remain of an old castle, first documented in the early thirteenth century but likely traceable to a bishop's fortification built around the tenth century as defence against Hungarian raids. It is a fragment of medieval history that adds to the prehistoric evidence found across the municipal territory, where excavations in the 1990s confirmed settlements dating back to the late Neolithic and Copper Age.
The Colli Berici vineyards
Sovizzo lies within the production zone of the Colli Berici DOC, the hill area south of Vicenza known for white wines based on garganega grapes and for reds made from cabernet and merlot. The mild winters and limited rainfall of the Colli Berici microclimate have long favoured vine cultivation on these gently rolling hills, which rise to no more than three or four hundred metres.
A residential town close to Vicenza
Because of its proximity to the provincial capital, Sovizzo has developed in recent decades as a residential town, chosen by those who work in Vicenza but prefer to live in a greener, less dense setting. The combination of hills, countryside and closeness to city services makes it a typical example of Vicenza's commuter belt.
