The village and the castle
The main village of Tregnago stretches along the Illasi stream, at the foot of the remains of a medieval castle that for centuries watched over access to the valley. The historic centre is home to the church of Santa Maria Assunta and Villa Pellegrini, while stone houses and porticoes speak of an economy always tied to hillside farming. Sheltered among the first rises of the Lessinia hills, the village has long been a reference point for the communities scattered across the valley's many hamlets.
The Val d'Illasi and eastern Lessinia
Tregnago lies in the upper Val d'Illasi, on the edge of eastern Lessinia, a pre-Alpine area cut by narrow valleys and streams flowing down toward the Verona plain. The municipal boundaries touch Badia Calavena, Vestenanova, Illasi, Cazzano di Tramigna, San Giovanni Ilarione and Mezzane di Sotto, part of a mosaic of hillside towns united by vineyards, chestnut woods and hiking trails. It remains a strongly rural landscape, where life still follows the rhythm of the farming seasons.
Wine and oil, products of the hills
The hills around Tregnago are planted with vineyards and olive groves, and the town has long been a centre of wine and olive oil production. The valley's exposure and mild climate favour these crops, which sit alongside chestnut woods at higher altitudes. The area's small farms keep alive a rural tradition that is also reflected in local festivals and markets dedicated to produce from the land.
The golden cherry and local traditions
Among the valley's fruits, cherries hold a place of honour and are locally celebrated as the golden cherry. Cherry growing, widespread in the hills around Tregnago, goes hand in hand with a calendar of village festivals marking the year, chief among them the ancient San Martino fair, a long-standing event that draws visitors from the valley and neighbouring towns.
Parish churches, villas and wash-houses in the hamlets
The municipal territory is made up of numerous hamlets scattered across the hillsides, each with its own historical heritage worth exploring at a slow pace. Notable among these is the ancient parish church of Calavena, also known as the church of the Disciplina, along with several 15th- and 16th-century villas dotted through the valley. Historic wash-houses also survive, such as those at Macermigo and Cogollo, small reminders of everyday life in another era that still punctuate the area's rural hamlets.
